IQI use 1A instead of 3A

IQI use 1A instead of 3A

Postby mohd » Mon Jul 08, 2013 2:25 pm

dear experts,
NDT: RT on full penetration butt weld of pipe
material: SB-677, UNS N08926
pipe diameter: 2inch
wall thickness: 3,91mm
radiography technique: ellipse
radiographer used IQI 1A instead of 3A
is it acceptable or cause for reject or reshoot?

regards

Please have a look to ASME V, art. 2, T-276.1, that states ''IQI shall be selected from either the same alloy material group or from an alloy material group or grade with less radiation absorption than the material being radiographed'' as well as to ASME V, art. 22, SE-747, par. 7.1.3 that states ''the materials increase in radiation absorption with increasing numerical designation'' and par. 7.1.5 ''any group IQI may be used for any material with a higher group number, provided the applicable quality level is maintained''. For all the above it is made clear that you can use set 1A instead of 3A.

Mohd,
What is a 3A type IQI ?
You have quoted UNS so I am presuming you are discussing ASME.
ASTM IQIs are types 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D - not sure where 3A comes from,

IQI 3A means that the ''set identification letter'' is: A and the ''material group number'' is: 3. Please have a look to the ASME V, art. 2, Table T-233.2 that specifies the ''set identification letters'' and to the ASME V, art. 22, SE-747, par. 7.2 that specifies the material groups. In addition, you could have a look to the ASME V, art. 22, SE-747, Figure 1 that clearly identifies such information.
