Slag inclusion problem

Slag inclusion problem

Postby Emre » Sat Jun 28, 2014 4:50 pm

Hi everyone,

We are producing spiral welded pipe. We have a two step production line.
First step is forming and tack welding with GMAW process (shielding gas 100% CO2- wire ER 7018-G (3,2 mm diameter)).
Second step is submerged arc welding (3 heads inside and 2 head outside).
We have a slag inclusion problem in these days. it comes by the side of inside weld bead, close to root area.
I am sharing defect's macro picture. I wonder yours' comments about this slag.

Thank you,

Emre,
That is not slag, that is Lack of Fusion.
GMAW does not produce slag and is notorious for LOF discontinuities if essential variables are not complied with,

Emre,
Further to my previous post - is the defect full length or only isolated ?
What size are the GMAW tacks ?
Are they being completely "burnt out" / absorbed by the SAW run ?
Cheers,
