Welding position qualification requirements

Postby smart22ash » Tue Sep 24, 2013 11:54 am

Dear Experts,
Please suggest me for the following condition in offshore.
We have a WPS with FCAW-S welding which is qualified for 2G position as per AWS D1.1 code. The welding requirement is for pile to pile.
Now the problem is that we have to do the additional pup piece on the deck only with the same material but the pipe is in fixed position (5G),
so what should be the course of action? Weather we can weld or we need to re qualify?
Thanks in advance

In no way you can weld in 5G position using WPS that specifies 2G position since the WPS should indicate to the welder the actual welding position. Please let us know the position used for the supporting PQR so as to verify the usage of the existing PQR (if so then a new WPS shall be issued).

Ashish,
Wefel is correct, you cannot weld 5G with a 2G WPS.
However, instead of having to qualify a new WPS you could rotate the pile and weld it all in the Flat position ?
Hope that helps,

Wefel and BB,
Thanks for your valuable suggestions. Here in offshore it is not possible to rotate the pile for 1G position. In supporting PQR also the position mentioned is 2G. So we could not use this WPS for 5G position. Apart from this any other solution because if we need to re qualify then it will take time for testing results and could hamper the schedule as well.
Thanks

Please verify whether the WPS conforms to all of the requirements of AWS D1.1, clause 3. If so, then a procedure qualification isn't required since the WPS is considered to be prequalified. Otherwise, since the qualification of 2G position qualifies (at best) for flat and horizontal positions (table 4.1) and it doesn't qualify for 5G position that is combination of flat, vertical and overhead positions as clarified by the figure 4.4(C), a new PQR shall be performed in accordance with AWS D1.1, clause 4. Regarding the schedule delay, I don't think that you could avoid it except if you take the risk to proceed with production welding while the procedure qualification process being underway.

it should be well known to all welders because it is very helpful and important for welders to clearly know about all the positions of welding since they have to do the welding works so it is very important for them to know about all these things

welding position qualification is one of the important qualification for the welders because it shows how much the welder is knowledgebale about the different welding positions

it should be applicable for whole welders because welding position qualification is mandatory for all
