How to convert API 5L PSL-1 pipe to PSL-2

Postby mohd » Tue Dec 17, 2013 6:03 am

Dear team,

Is there any way to convert project spared API 5L X52 PSL-1 pipe to API 5L X52 PSL-2 by additional charpy test as per 6.2.6.2 and appedix-J? Is it allowed by the code or it is not possible?

regards,

Mohd,
PSL-1 and PSL-2 differ not only regarding mandatory notch toughness requirements of PSL-2 but also PSL-2 has mandatory requirements for carbon equivalent, maximum yield strength and maximum tensile strength as well. Moreover they have different chemical composition and they may have been underwent in different NDTs. There are also some differences in manufacturing procedure like the one regarding "Electric Welded Pipe" where there are two separate paragraphs, one for PSL-1 and another one for PSL-2, as well as regarding repair of defects by welding of seamless pipe and parent metal of welded pipe, where repair by welding is permissible for PSL-1 but not for PSL-2 (all of those differences between PSL-1 and PSL-2 are summarized in Appendix J which has already been referred by you). So, I don't think that you can do a PSL-1 to be certified as PSL-2 by just doing only charpy impact test and even in the case that you acceptably perform on the PSL-1 pipe all the additional tests required for PSL-2, how can you prove that the PSL-1 has not been repaired by welding during the manufacturing process?
Please let us have your opinion.
Thanks,
Alesio
