Sample selection to the specified depth in weld overlay

Postby Cgandhi1975 » Tue Feb 02, 2016 7:16 am

In one of our project, heat exchanger flanges are weld overlaid and samples are to be taken from each overlaid component to perform chemical analysis to the specified depth.

Now, I'm curious to know the word "specified depth". In MDS of Exchangers, specified overlay thickness is 3 or 5 mm from fusion line. Client Spec calls "Minimum thickness of undiluted finished weld overlay from top shall be 2 mm or as specified in the drawings". From where sample selection to be done? Either 1 or 3 mm from fusion line?

Cgandhi1975,
Since the minimum thickness of undiluted finished weld overlay from top shall be 2 mm, then the sample selection shall be taken exactly below that thickness. So, in case of 3 mm weld overlay the examined surface is the one that is 1 mm above fusion line. In case of 5 mm weld overlay the examined surface is the one that is 3 mm above fusion line.
Please let us have your aspect
